Task = You are to carry out a small scale research project on a director of your choice. it will be based on 1 focus film and make appropriate reference to at least 2 other related films that the director has made. It is worth 40% of your coursework marks. Coursework at A2 is worth 50% of your overall grade so it is worth doing well!

How is it structured?

The research is completed in 2 parts:

An annotated catalogue of 10-15 items (1000 words) (15 Marks)

A presentation script (1500 words) (25 Marks)

What is an annotated catalogue?

The annotated catalogue will contain 10-15 items selected from your total primary and secondary research.

Each catalogue item must be appropriately referenced e.g. Sight and Sound, September 2008, Volume 18 Issue 9 –The Quiet American, By Geoff Andrew (an article on Clint Eastwood), Clint Eastwood interview – YouTube – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsE6qegTkWE&feature=related) or Screening the Male, By Steven Cohan & Ina Rae Hark – The Dialectic of Female Power and Male Hysteria in play Misty for Me, by Adam Knee (Routledge 1992)

Each item must also be accompanied by a brief note which explains how the particular item is relevant to the area of investigation and what it contributes to the overall research. e.g. This very detailed source is very useful as it describes a link in the way in which the central male character is presented in many of Eastwoods later films and suggests meanings behind the presentation. It also refers to the subject of sexual politics within the film, and how the central female, (which again can be compared to other Eastwood films), is threatening the male dominating role. Further more it refers to the use of jazz music within the film that also features in other Eastwood films, spiralling from Eastwoods own interest in jazz piano. However, the source also provides a lot of in-depth information about the film which is not overly useful in comparison to other Eastwood films. (This is the entry for the chapter from ‘Screening the Male’)

The catalogue must conclude with a short paragraph which lists significant items not selected for inclusion in the catalogue offering brief reasons why. This will be about 200 words.

You should create a blog for your Film studies personal study and email the link to your film teacher. This way you can keep all of your research in the same place and you tutor and classmate can give feedback.

Over the summer you should have watched at least three films by two different directors that interest you. You should now be trying to find what has been written about them and their films.

Your first blog post should be a short summary of your initial project ideas.

You should then post any other information you find about your directior.

Here is an example blog http://radicalchaplin.blogspot.com/

You should search for information, books and acticles on the internet and the libraries that you have access to:

Internet:

www.imbd.com

www.wikipedia.com

Libraries search:

BFI Library (we will be running a trip next term): http://ftvdb.bfi.org.uk/searches.php

Cambridgeshire Libraries: https://ibistro.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/uhtbin/webcat

Long Road Library: http://blotts/scripts/opacreq.dll/new

Anglia Ruskin Library: http://libweb.anglia.ac.uk/index.html
